Velvet After Dark: Night-Out Looks for Halloween Weekend
Halloween lands on a Saturday this year, which means a whole weekend of parties, dinners and nights out. If a full costume isn't your thing, velvet is the answer: it's one of the biggest fabrics of fall 2026, it feels festive after dark, and it keeps working long after October 31st. Here are four night-out looks built around pieces from my closet, plus a few easy ways to turn each one into a costume.
1. Midnight Blue
A deep blue velvet jumpsuit with a choker collar does all the work. Add metallic heels, small silver hoops and a sleek low bun. For an easy costume twist, add a glittery star headband and you're a night sky.
2. Moody Red
Deep red is the color of the season, and a halter jumpsuit with an open back is made for a night out. Throw a black blazer or leather jacket over your shoulders for the walk between parties. Costume twist: add devil horns and a red lip.
3. All That Shimmer
A black shimmer jumpsuit with a belted waist catches the light without the weight of sequins. It ties right into this fall's statement-belt trend: swap the matching belt for a bold gold buckle. Costume twist: cat ears and a winged liner.
4. Soft Glam
Not every Halloween plan is a party. For dinner out, a beige velvet midi with gold jewelry and a cozy hooded poncho over the top keeps you warm on a chilly October night and still feels dressed up.
Caring for Velvet
Steam, don't iron. An iron can crush the pile, so hang velvet in a steamy bathroom or use a handheld steamer from the inside of the garment.
Hang it, don't fold it. Folding leaves creases in velvet. Use a padded hanger and give it space in the closet.
Check the care label. Many velvets are dry clean only, so check before you wash.
